To Adopt A General Semantics Approach To Teaching/learning Of Soft Skills And Communication Skills
English is a language of science and technology, trade and commerce and a ‘window' language in international diplomacy. It is a tool of effective communication to promote globalization. It plays a vital in an information society and employment environment and serves as a ‘link' language. A person to excel in job, needs technical skills and soft skills such as the ability to work individually and in teams, communicate clearly and effectively, make good use of time and solve complex problems Soft skills is defined as "the non-technical skills, abilities and traits that workers need to function in a specific employment environment". They include four sets of workplace competencies such as problem solving and other cognitive skills, oral verbal communication skills, personal traits and work ethics, and interpersonal and teamwork skills. So far as communication skills is concerned, a worker has to acquire a good knowledge of the foundation or basic skills in reading, listening, writing and speaking; he needs the skill of note taking, summarizing or paraphrasing, asking questions, documentations, presentation and interpretation of messages and ideas and using body language to interact and infer message. A worker today also needs a good command over technical vocabulary and the power to comprehend and evaluate critically. He has to acquire job skills, writing resume, applications, reports, letters and presentation skills. In fact, work ethics and soft skills are ‘life essentials' of the emerging labor force, which need to be addressed through development of teaching techniques and methodologies in schools and colleges. In order to prepare an efficient workforce in a technological and global work environment as ours, we need to initiate the process of inculcating these skills in our young learners from childhood so as to ensure a technological fluency in them. This obviously necessitates an overhauling of the present curriculum in English in our schools and colleges, particularly in technical colleges and institutes.
Moreover, teaching soft skills, communication skills, grammar and other items in English may land us in unknown territories and create more confusion than solving any if the methodology and techniques of teaching these items are not taken care of. "The map is not the territory", said Alfred Korzybski in his discussion on General Semantics. Words or statements, written or spoken, may be interpreted in several ways depending on the place, context, time, and the position or stature of the speaker or writer. General Semantics promotes a scientific approach to human behaviour. It deals with critical thinking, communication system, rational behaviour, general sanity and the "perception-evaluation-communication process". It deals with studying the effects of language and the symbol systems on human behaviour. By integrating knowledge from various academic fields including language, communication studies and sciences, it attempts to develop a scientific temper and an effective communication skill required for the 21st century. It has a tremendous impact on the day-to-day activities, interaction and relationships. The principles of General Semantics are applied to train bureaucrats, factory workers, soldiers, technocrats and educationists in America and many developed countries today.
We confuse the word with what it stands for and act as if the meaning of the words we use is contained solely in the word without considering the significance of the individuals speaking and hearing the word. We tend to confuse facts with our inferences, assumptions and beliefs. We often use language to ‘separate' that which in the actual world can not be separated, such as ‘space' from ‘time', ‘mind' from ‘body' etc. General Semantics attempts to eliminate the errors in language teaching and use. The dissertation is an attempt to apply the principles of General Semantics, particularly the thesis developed by Korzybski in his Science and Sanity: An Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics and Role of Language in the Perceptual Process in teaching-learning, particularly teaching English language to develop soft skills and communication skills.
