Vital Facts About Black Mold
Stachybotrys is a genus of fungi whose species are generally greenish-black in color. A number of those species contain a substance that is toxic when inhaled. Its toxicity has been known to cause illnesses akin to allergy in humans and their pets. It has also been the cause of deaths. For those reasons, the phrases "black mold" and "toxic mold" are often used to collectively refer to the genus itself. The terms can be misleading on account of the fact that there are other types of fungi that are black and toxic.
We have to be aware of the fact that there are other genera of fungi which are black in color and capable of producing harmful spores into the air. That is one good reason to refer to Stachybotrys as "Stachybotrys" or perhaps to coin a more specific word for it. Specifically, the terms "black mold" or "toxic mold" denote one particularly dangerous species called Stachybotrys chartarum, otherwise known as S. atra or S. alternans
Physical properties and habitat
The actual color of this species is black with a tinge of green. Stachybotris is one of the smallest types of fungi. They are distributed worldwide. They typically grow in circular patterns on surfaces that are cellulose-impregnated and wet. The material which binds all living cells together in the body of the organism is called cellulose. In our daily lives, it finds many uses.
When you are outdoors, you can find Stachybotris on dead trees, tree stumps and logs. Areas which are prone to flooding will have fertile colonies of Stachybotrys. Likewise, these fungi are active from July to well into autumn. During those months, the air may be filled with billions of fungal spores which may cause allergies or illnesses or both.
Indoors, you will encounter molds of all types in those places which are regularly wet. This will be the case with the walls behind bathroom sinks, kitchen sinks and bathtubs. The same goes for the floors in those areas. The floor of the basement normally has a sizable quantity of mold colonies. Places which are enclosed and therefore retain moisture instead of releasing it are also locations where mold colonies can typically be found. These places include portions of the wall and ceiling which are enclosed by panels. Places where things are stored are likewise favorite breeding grounds of fungi. These include closets and cabinets. Molds attach themselves to objects which are impregnated with cellulose. Among these are rayon, linen and cotton fabrics, cellophanes, films for cameras and many others.
The toxic spores
Stachybotrys reproduces itself asexually. In other words each individual mold is a potential parent. This accounts for the spectacular rate at which their colonies can grow. a house that is infested by "black mold" will have air that is contaminated by the dangerous spores of this fungi. These spores enter the body when the animal or the human being breathes.
Signs that there is a "black mold" infestation in your house
If members of your family have suddenly developed symptoms of chronic fatigue, migraines, red eyes, persistent sneezing and coughing and redness of the skin you may have one or both of two things in your house. There may be substances in the house that are causing allergic reactions in the people. On the other hand you may be infested with "toxic mold" fungi without your knowing it. In such cases, you should approach an expert in this matter before attempting to do anything. Only they will know how to identify and eradicate the pathogenic molds in your house.
