Teaching yourself to play piano-Get Three Beginner Lessons And Great Advice
When teaching yourself, in my opinion, you immediately have an advantage over taking paid lessons from a tutor; in that you are under no pressure to complete a lesson in say an hour to get your value for money. I hope not to decry private tuition of course. Many young Maestros take this journey and are successful musicians at the end. Teaching yourself, you can learn as fast or as slow as you like. If you are reading this article I will assume that this is your purpose.
I can tell you learning to play the piano is not difficult, and you will enjoy and be surprised at how quickly you are able to play a song or two. Firstly, I will say this though, you will need to be focused and a little disciplined in your practice routines. It is fair to say that when we learn something new, if we leave it for any length of time with the intention of, getting back to it soon, you will find that you have to revisit your previous lessons and this will delay your progress. You really need to set aside a set time to practice and progress comfortably and without pressure. This is after all to be enjoyed.
In order to guarantee success with teaching yourself to play the piano, you will need, apart from an instrument of course; you will need a firm foundation of keyboard knowledge. Actually knowing what you are looking at when you sit down at your piano or keyboard, without having to look at charts or keyboard layouts; I will help you with that here, in this article. This article is number five of a set of seven, set in such an order that at the end you will be able to play your first song.
First Lesson.
Western Music is based on the first seven letters of the alphabet; A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and these are all white keys; to find them on the keyboard is simple, the white key to the left of the twinned black keys is the C note. The position of the C note is the same up and down the keyboard, so it follows in alphabetical order, that the other notes are also White keys in their same position up and down the keyboard. Using this knowledge, If you look at the white key to the left of the triple black keys this will be the F. note. Now you can say you know every white key on any piano or keyboard of any size, anywhere.
Second Lesson.
Now that you are familiar with these White keys and can point out and name any white note on any keyboard; I can tell you the next part of your foundation info; and that is, if you start at any C note and go in any direction to the next C note, for instance going up the keyboard, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. That is the scale of C major. That is the easiest scale to learn, you just did.
Third Lesson.
The black keys can be confusing because they do have more than one name, if we say that every black note to the right of a white
note is a sharp and every black note to the left of a white note is a flat you will see that some cross over. For instance the black note to the right of the white C will be C#. [C sharp] but it is also to the left of the white note D. and so is also Db. [D flat] The second piece of your piano knowledge foundation is to know these, and which one holds its title as the dominant name.
Remember this [C # can also be called Db]. going to the right Eb, F#, [G#, can also be called Ab], and that leaves Bb. So reading from A to G we have Ab, Bb, C#/Db, Eb, F#, G#/Bb. These are the most used sharps and flats, and you do now know how to locate them. Just remember any black note to the right of a white note is a sharp and any black note to the left of a white note is a flat. Now you know every note on the keyboard and the scale of C Major. This is the foundation you will need to progress, is this easy or what?
Here ends your three lessons on teaching yourself to play the piano. You now have some building blocks towards your foundation. The lessons you will need to begin to play a song or two are just as easy. If you want to be a concert pianist, that could take a little longer, and is more technical. For now teach yourself to play the piano and have fun doing it.
OK, just one more tip, as a practice routine and to help you with black keys. If you play from A, to the next A, going to the right, call the black notes sharps, if you then go back down, left to the first A, call the black notes flats. It will all make sense as you progress. Take in the all above information write it down and save it. I always recommend you play and say over and over again so it sticks in your memory. Plan your piano lessons. Doing this will keep you on course and you will progress and you will look forward to your next lesson. Remember this is your adventure, enjoy it, have fun with it.
