To Jump or Not to Jump the Broom: Wedding Themes & Tradition
In light of the recent romantic comedies to just hit the movies in recent weeks, Jumping the Broom and Bridesmaids, I thought I would tackle one of the most important aspects of planning a wedding, the wedding theme or wedding traditions. Often times as a wedding and Event planner, and owner of CK Events, I find that clients struggle with the thought of what a theme is and how to structure their event around it. I believe every wedding (event) is unique because of the uniqueness of the individual.
From the time a little girl dreams of being married until that moment actually occurs much influence can shape how the actual day will turn out. I know for my own experience, my wedding turned out nothing like I thought it would as a little girl. We as people incorporate our own flavor, culture, customs, and traditions into our "big" day, or perhaps what our parents feel are the important things for our "big" day. From the simple things like colors, dresses, flowers or not so simple to the difficult ones like vows, ceremony, rings, etc. much goes into the process of selecting a wedding theme. A wedding theme is more than a color, dress or flower. The definition of Theme, Tradition, and Customs are as follows:
Theme: a subject or topic of discourse or of artistic representation theme of the story> b: a specific and distinctive quality, characteristic, or concerntheme>
Tradition: an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior (as a religious practice or a social custom) b: a belief or story or a body of beliefs or stories relating to the past that are commonly accepted as historical though not verifiable
2: the handing down of information, beliefs, and customs by word of mouth or by example from one generation to another without written instruction
3: cultural continuity in social attitudes, customs, and institutions
Custom: a usage or practice common to many or to a particular place or class or habitual with an individual b: long-established practice considered as unwritten law c: repeated practice d: the whole body of usages, practices, or conventions that regulate social life
For most brides and some grooms, they try to incorporate all of who they are into their wedding, whether it be using a family heirloom as part of their wedding or that of cultural and religious traditions. Whether the influence comes from the courting of the relationship, a school, the first kiss, the place they met, where he proposed, where they grew up at or what his or her mother/grandmother wore or did at their wedding.
Without giving the details of the movies away ( I hate when people do that) , a wedding is the joining of two people from two families, two customs, two traditions, two beliefs and sometimes not from the same background or beliefs which may or may not pose a challenge to the wedding in its own right.
One thing I could not help but notice from the movie, Jumping the Broom was the highlight of social class difference between the two African American families. For those who are not aware "jumping the broom" was a cultural ceremony performed during slavery times when slaves were not allowed to marry legally in a "traditional" ceremony like their master counterparts. The "jumping the broom" was the slaves way of acknowledging the union of two people under their GOD. This is one tradition that has been passed on in African American culture that some are getting away from. Not all African American weddings today incorporate this tradition. Yes I understand that traditions, customs and people change with time but It's quite different than a Jewish, Asian or Indian wedding where most of the traditions are based on religion or spiritual beliefs. Bridesmaids, the movie on the other hand tackles the informal, non traditional aspects of the wedding-- the fun side. Not to mention I just read an article on Yahoo about Miranda Lambert who recently married Blake Shelton (country singer, judge on the voice). She got married in her mother's wedding dress, Just one of many ways to add a personal touch to your day but still in your own way. A lot easier said than done when you are joining two to become one.
Increasing in numbers are individuals marrying from different religious backgrounds. By far not an easy task for a wedding planner! Again some cultures required adhering to religious rituals in order for the marriage to be valid. However one may choose to define their wedding day. I suggest being open with what you want have inspiration for all areas that defines you and your soon to be spouse., A challenge that may or may not be! (different article) .
