An Overview of Woodwind Musical Instruments
Woodwind musical instruments are the group of musical instruments that are typically shaped like long cylindrical tubes or pipes and utilize vibrating air in order to produce the musical notes or sounds. Despite the fact that their name suggests they are all made of wood, some woodwind instruments are also made out of other materials including various metals, plastic, and ivory. Several woodwind instruments are typically used by orchestras and are often used for solos as they are capable of producing sounds that carry far and can be heard over other instruments in the orchestra when they are playing.
How Woodwind Musical Instruments Deliver Sounds
The most commonly known woodwind instruments have many similarities in their design and can be basically described as hollow tubes or pipes with an opening on each end and several holes in various positions throughout the length of the tube. These holes can be covered individually by keys or fingers in order to produce different tones or pitches. The sounds are created by a column of air that vibrates or resonates and is produced by an individual blowing over a hole at the end of the instrument or through a mouthpiece attached to the end. Flutes are an example of woodwind musical instruments that require the player to create a stream of air that blows across a hole at the end or near the end of the instrument.
