Dirty South Music
When the emergence of hip hop music in New York City drastically changed the music industry permanently during the 80's, it is already inevitable that artists from other regions would stand up and start their own type of musical genre. Dirty South or Southern hip hop music is the rap and hip hop music that started from the clubs of the southern states of America. While New York's hip hop focused more on the ghetto style, Southern rap has more clubbing and party vibe incorporated to it. This is not to say that dirty south rap is full of auto-tuned rap, though. Suffice to say, despite similarities, New York hip hop and Dirty South rap have distinct hip hop sounds in them that only true hip hop fans would be able to distinguish.
Dirty South music started in southern states like New Orleans, Virginia Beach, Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, Houston, Shreveport, Nashville, Atlanta, Charleston, Memphis, Birmingham, Mobile, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Jacksonville, Little Rock, San Antonio, Dallas, and Baton Rouge. In listening to dirty south mixtapes, you will immediately observe the evident southern accent of rappers from the area. The beats and the music are incorporated with southern aesthetic and gothic themes. Dirty South music had initial difficulty in creating foundation for their music especially in the 80's when recording companies were very hesitant in accepting them to record labels because of the popularity of the New York Style Hip Hop. Thus, in their desire to be heard, Southern Hip Hop artists started to record their songs and distribute them locally in bars and live performances.
