If you live in England, just car hire and drive to Ireland if you’re in the mood for green hills, locally distilled whiskey, and rich, historical sites such as the beautifully restored Kilkenny Castle...
Each year, 6 million tourists visit Ireland. Although, most of them come in the summer, Ireland in March has also a lot to offer; from its most famous St Patrick’s Festival and St Patrick’s Day Parade- a wild, green five days compared to the more modern Dublin fashion Week. Everyone can come and find something for themselves.
HOW TO GET THERE
Ireland has four main airports, Dublin, Belfast, Shannon and Cork. The main airport is Dublin and this is home to the national carrier, Aer Lingus. They fly to and from UK and European airports daily. The best place to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day is to rent a car at the airport and drive to the capital.
ST. PATRICK’S DAY
St. Patrick’s Day is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick (circa AD 385–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland, and is generally celebrated on 17th of March. He was abducted and brought to Ireland where he later spread Christianity and became the patron saint of the country, for allegedly driving out all the snakes. In Ireland it is a public holiday and in recent years the celebrations have increased to make it a national day of rejoicing.
The first Saint Patrick's Festival was held on 17 March, 1996. In 1997, it became a three-day event. By 2006, the festival was five days long; over 675,000 people attended the 2009 parade. This year, St Patrick’s Day celebrates its 15th anniversary, bringing the nation alive, and promising six lively days and nights of free celebrations and encompassing a feeling of what it means to be or just feel Irish. This is a day like no other and the atmosphere in the streets will have you singing and dancing with the locals in no time. This year, the festival Parade features newly commissioned, highly original and inventive street theatre troupes, artists, giant puppetry, dancers and marching bands from Ireland and across the globe.
Down south, the city of Cork is expanding its traditional one-day party to a three-day festival with everything from a carnival to traditional music and a parade. However if larger crowds don't suit you, every village should have something planned for the day and can avoid both crowds and high prices in the smaller towns. You can drive to the countryside and see the miles of green hills and visit small villages with inviting, traditional pubs. Irish people are most light-hearted, funny people on the planet, jovial and very hospitable; therefore visiting this country is very much advised. We would also recommend dining at pubs (which should be lively around the holiday). Pubs offer both low prices on often quite good food, along with an introduction to local culture, music and cuisine.
Car hire Ireland is quite straightforward and easy, so if you want to visit other places than Dublin, we highly recommended this means of transport.
