There have been many great mezzo-sopranos in the history of opera such as Agnes Baltsa, Cecilia Bartoli, Frederica von Stade and many others since the role was first created and though it is not one which has been around as long as the role of soprano; it is still one of the most important voices in opera. There being many important parts for mezzo-sopranos in the world of opera with arguably the most famous of these being the role of the gypsy "Carmen" in the opera by the same name written by Georges Bizet. For my part, I would like to say that one of my favorite mezzo-sopranos is Latvia's Elina Garanca who has something about her which not only gives her voice a lovely sound to it; to place her amongst the best mezzo-sopranos of all time but makes her such a delight to see on stage. Of course, in all this I must say that I have never actually seen Elina Garanca live on stage yet I have seen her many times on the French TV channel "Mezzo". It being there where in a video I saw how wonderful she was in the part of Giovanna from Verdi's "Rigoletto". Elina Garanca appearing alongside Anna Netrebko in a quartet which also included Ramon Vargas and Ludovic Tezier while giving a delightful performance which not only blended in so nicely with these three distinguished singers but demonstrated her talent as a performer. Elina Garanca having a very playful spirit along with her graceful moves on stage which brings an interesting sex appeal to opera . This making her very similar in this respect to Angela Gheorghiu and Anna Netrebko.
Elina Garanca, in fact having lovely blonde hair and a look about her which is very typical of the beautiful Nordic type to be found in Latvia; specially amongst many of its lovely ladies . Elina Garanca's height being one to make her tall though not overly while her body gives her a very sensual bodacious figure to provide her with a very sexy appearance on stage which added to the sensuous way she conducts herself; makes her most delightful to watch. Face wise Elina Garanca has a sweet softness about her face which is very similar to my ex-girlfriend, Victoria Rutkowska; who like Elina Garanca is also fromLatviaand studied the clarinet in the very same music school inLatvia.
Elina Garanca like my ex being a graduate from the "Latvian AcademyOf Music" or the "Jazeps Viols Latvian Academy of Music" as it also known as. This not only being the top music school in Latvia but one of the best in what was the former Soviet Union. The Latvian Academy of Music combining both music and ballet in producing not only great singers like Elina Garanca but one of the best ballet dancers of all time in Baryshnikov.
As for Elina Garanca, she seems to have a great ability to perform perhaps given the tender expressions she makes with her eyes and mouth while singing. As it her facial features which like her voice give so much character and sensuality to the parts she sings. This being specially apparent when she sings the part of Carmen in her own fashion which brings a new excitement to this most traditional of roles for the mezzo-soprano. I for my part, recommend those who have not yet seen Elina Garanca sing that they catch her wonderful performances of "Habanera", "Les tringles Des Sistres Tintaient" and "Près Des Remparts De Seville" on youtube. These performances being truly fantastic as Elina Garanca demonstrates how not only her body but voice and personality are so ideal for the role of this perhaps best known of all opera characters. Of course for those who wish to see Elina Garanca live, they might consider traveling toRiga (Latvia) where she can be seen several times a year performing in the "Latvian National Opera".
